As a Dancer....
My background is in Latin American and Theatre jazz. It was where I began my childhood dancing and it influences my choreography to date. After giving up Latin American aged 16 and dancing Jazz most of my life, I wanted to break out into something new. So I tried Contemporary. Taking 2 classes a week and often a private lesson I began to fall in love with it and wondered why I hadn't tried it before?! It allowed me to explore emotion in a deeper way and I found a way of self expression. My practice as a choreographer and teacher now is a fusion of all three main genres I have trained in. I would say it is Contemporary focused and heavy on emotion but there is always a hint of Latin American and Jazz in my choreography.
Alongside my own work, I have also danced for other artists. I have worked with choreographer Shelley Owen on one of her performances of 'SpeedDating'. I was part of a research and development phase for the work and then went on to perform in the work when it showcased at Turn festival, Manchester. Alongside this, I have also been a dancer for Reforma Movement Theatre for the 'Forever Manchester' event.
As a Researcher...
My research looks at the creation of 'performative costume' as a practice between a dancer/choreographer and a costume designer. I am fascinated how this creative process works and have found several ways design can assist in choreographic development. My practice looks at how costume, clothing and objects have an impact on choreographic creation and believe it to be influential in the practice of multidisciplinary performance practice. My research so far has invited me to guest lecture on both the Dance and Costume degrees at Bath Spa University.
As a Dance and Visual Artist...
My company S L Movement, was set up in February this year. The work the company creates is based on Dance, Movement and Improvisation work with a specific focus on imagery, objects and textiles. As a creative artist my work is very multidisciplinary and is largely influenced by objects and imagery and their connection to the body and the creation of choreography. I work on combining my research into 'performative costume' into my creative work and see this as the companies 'niche'.
S L Movement has to date created three pieces of work that have all premiered in Bath, UK. My first work 'Same Again?' premiered at Evolve platform in Bath in February this year alongside three other works by emerging artists. All three works are completely unique to one another and are all works in progress which will continue their journeys in 2018/19. You can read more about them on the 'projects' section.
As a Screendance maker...
I have to date released two short dance films as a screendance maker. 'Two steps into Jazz' is a short 1 minute film that was my debut as a maker. 'The Whisperer' was my first major screendance film which looked at the topic of anxiety and control. Both films can be found on the 'projects' page. Alongside my work with S L Movement, I have also collaborated on a screendance film 'InLuz' with other dance artists which was entered into the Lightmoves festival.
